What is Child Psychology?

Childhood is the most beautiful phase of life, where a human goes through the most sensitive period of learning, developing emotional and psychological behaviors. Social circumstances happening in this age leave very long lasting effects on a human’s personality. People having sympathetic hearts and sensitive natures can easily understand the development of certain behaviors of a child that are a representation of a social reflection. However, generally we do not see an adoption of a careful attitude and handling with regards to child psychology. This applies more specifically on deprived ones whose psyche gets much complex due to uncertain and unnatural social responses. Let us know first what child psychology is? 

Child psychology spotlights on the mind and behavior of child from prenatal growth through adolescence. It deals not only with how a child grows physically, but with their rational, emotional and societal development as well. The disorders or deprivations in the childhood lasts very strong effects on a child's personality especially if one loses anyone among the parents. The loss of any of parent can leave an eternal vacuum.  

Now let's take a look at deprivation and then the treatment that needs to be adopted to cure it. The deprived are the ones who has prolonged period of paternal deprivation or they do not have wards to look after and are homeless. They are neglected by society and are deprived of all beautiful relationships in life. Robert Braul said, "The world knows how to straighten out a spoiled child but never makes it up to a child deprived."

The term "deprivation" is quiet ambiguous and it lacks any concrete definition. But whenever we speak about it we think about orphans. Orphans are children deprived of parental care and sometimes this deprivation leads to a lot more like social deprivation. Separation in early life from parents leads to long term ill effects, particularly adversely effecting emotional development.

It is not a surprising fact that the care of deprived and delinquent children in society is very pathetic. A deprived child develops fear and sometimes hatred towards society depending upon the treatment being received from people around him. Any kind of deprivation results in hurting child's brain development. So adopting a better approach, a collective social effort can protect such children by simply showering our love. Never show disrespect and hatred for the one already struck by the fate. A little kindness, little generosity and love does not cost us anything, but leaves long lasting positive effects on those souls recipient of this love. 

Traditionally, let’s see where is a deprived child sent? We all know for sure that homeless and orphan children are mostly sent to orphanages for their rehabilitation. Orphanages these days are shambling with poor education quality, unhygienic environment and lack of mental counseling. Children become deprived of their rights, love care and dignity. There should be a framework of care and order in the child's life. When a stable homely environment, affection, continuity of care and some basic social standards be provided to a deprived child; he will easily get out of all depression, stress, negativity and can live a healthy happy life.

It is therefore a moral duty of all humans to treat all human beings especially orphans affectionately providing protection to them, taking care of their needs, avoiding harshness and by not adopting cruel attitude towards them

In today's modern era, life has become merely a reflection of rat race, where no-one is bothered about the rest of the fellows. In such a mechanical times, one can think of the condition being faced by the poor, needy, helpless and the orphans who have got no one to take care of, no one to support. But only if for a while, we could take a pause and think, is this all we are born for? Would we lead the life with mere shallow purposes, or can we look deep into the eyes of the deprived ones and offer a helping hand to them for getting out of the miseries, life put on their shoulders without their will?

We all human beings have been bestowed with this beautiful gift of life once and the true purpose would be achieved when we could leave footprints with our positive accomplishments and none of the other deeds would be greater than helping the fellow human beings especially the deprived ones. It doesn't take much of our time and resources to bring difference in the lives of underprivileged, even little effort by each one of us would bring massive results. Once we speak of the deprived ones, orphans stand first to have our compassion and attention. Mother Teresa rightly expresses their feelings as:

"I have come to realize more and more that the greatest disease and the greatest suffering is to be unwanted, unloved, uncared for, to be shunned by everybody, to be just nobody (to no one)".

Losing either of the parents brings one's life under greater catastrophes. It is not only the financial pressures but the loss of care, love, support and affection changes one's life entirely. The personalities are left with a huge vacuum. The shelter that protects them from the scorching heat of the outside world disappears suddenly and one is left alone to face all pressures. There are number of NGO's and orphanages that are taking care of such people and in-number of people are donating as well. However, if we see the increasing ratio of orphans on daily basis, there are still huge number of people in the world that are deprived.

It is not always necessary that we should start helping at a massive scale, a little help also means a lot. The point to be considered is, it is collective responsibility, not only one or two NGOs or Welfare Organizations can do it. If each one of us would feel accountable and would contribute even a little, a number of children would be helped in a much better way. Occasional visits to the orphanages on special events such as Eids, Christmas, national holidays etc, will give them a great sense of belonging.

Furthermore, such an efforts should not be restricted to individual levels. Institutions and companies can play a significant role in bringing a great difference in these children's lives. Schools can render them free educations. Hospitals can give them free medical treatment. Lawyers can take up their cases free of charge. Colleges can offer special scholarship programs for the deserving students.

Helping emotionally and financially is not important merely, what's important is to help them become a useful member of the society. Instead of leading whole life dependently, they themselves should become a helping hand for others for bringing deprived ones out of the catastrophes. Secondly, one should always help others in a way without compromising their integrity and self-respect.

For charitable acts, Robert Brault has articulated his thoughts very nicely as; "The willingness to share does not make one charitable; it makes one free" and that's a great feeling if one could achieve.

Charity Can do Wonders 

Being a Muslim, We are duty bound to pay zakat every year. This money can do wonders if we donate it to the orphanages. This can buy them the daily commodities and food that we always take for granted. But the most important thing here is that, while we are helping them and even we are donating them our old used goods, that should be done with dignity. These orphans have already lost their parents and homes. Sense of deprivation already has scared their minds. The last thing they need will be losing their self respect. So while you are spending your money to help them, try not to make it a self projecting deed. Being a Muslim, we know that the real reward of helping the deprived comes from Allah. 

Apart from the monetary help, we can do much more than we think. Being a lawyer, one can fight their cases free of charge. Being a doctor, one can offer them free medical checkups and services from time to time. Being an educator, one can offer free of cost tuitions to a number of orphans; and the list goes on. In our own little ways, we can bring little bundles of joys into their lives. This is the way to pay our gratitude to our Creator, Almighty Allah for bestowing us with the giving hand, not the receiving one. 

Multiple Activities of Children at Kidzania

A Visit to Kidzania

The Children of Rumah Aman had been taken to Kidzania, that provides children and their parents a safe, unique, and very realistic educational environment and allows kids between the ages of four to twelve to do what comes naturally to them like role-playing by mimicking activities e.g working like insurance companies, Sony, postal service, fire truck, road license authority, etc 

The indoor theme park is a city specifically built for children with complete buildings, paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy, and recognizable destinations in the form of "establishments" sponsored and branded by leading multi-national and local brands. 

The basic concept behind this is to let the children work like real role models and they may adopt and develop their minds for the upcoming future challenges. 

With the awareness of multiple types of works available, children can prepare their minds as what would they like to do in future and can follow the relevant course of education. 

Children of Rumah Aman had been fortunate enough to visit Kidzania. They were given certain amount of money when they started their day which they either spent in shops or worked in those shops to get a wage.

Overall it was a well organised trip arranged by Rumah Aman for the kids' mental nourishment and children enjoyed their activities a lot besides grasping the images of future roles on the other hand.

How to Help the Needy?

Almost every good human being wants to help humanity one way or the other. Too much money is never a necessity for helping the poor. There are multiple ways to help the deserving and it requires a sympathetic and kind heart. The most important act is to motivate people in your surroundings like friends, peers, relatives and others for the noble act. Convincing others for a good deed is like a chain, where each person would start motivating the next for the noble cause. Here are just some of the ways you can start helping those less fortunate that yourself.

1. Look into your surrounding with fresh eyes and try to see what others' agonies and problems are. Put yourself in others' shoes and feel the problem and pain.
2. Think about the things that are not in your use but be of mighty significance for the ones in need. Donate these little things to the orphanages and charity centers and convince others as well for the donation.
3. Look out for the orphanages and arrange a coaching session for the poor, teach and train them how to earn and live an independent living. Teaching a small skill might help the others to a great extent.
4. Once you are taking your family members for the outing, take a poor child as well with you. This small act may not affect you too much but it will have great impact on the child’s mind. Treat them gently.  
5. Donate good books to the orphanages and it will help several to get benefited. Look for the children school books at home of previous years not of any use any more and donate these. It won’t cost you anything but will help the one who will not have to buy the new ones.
6. Arrange occasional feast or meals for any of the orphanage of your area.  You can ask multiple people to decide and donate for the meals and collectively it will cost little to each but the purpose of feeding the poor would be solved.
7. Purchase top fruit cans, juice boxes, peanuts, oatmeal cookies, other items that don’t have to be cooked and donate.
8. Purchase winter clothing, personal hygiene products, Stationary items, bedding (like quilts, sheets, blankets, pillows). Donate any item that you can, it might be of very little cost to you but it may help the others a lot.

Iftar with Bank Rakyat Berhad

The boys and staff of Rumah Aman were guests of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad (www.bankrakyat.com.my) at their iftar (breaking of fast) which was held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre on Friday August 19, 2011.

Rumah Aman received a cheque from Bank Rakyat as part of their zakat and the boys each received cash for the upcoming Eid Fitr.

Our Friends in Blackburn

All of us at Rumah Aman are always grateful to Allah for blessing us with friends who care and believe in what we are doing. This is especially so during this blessed month of Ramadhan and when Rumah Aman 2 is well on the way to completion.

Our friends in Blackburn is a case in point. Since 2008, through the tireless efforts of Sister Sofia Esa and Sister Latifa Umar, the ladies from Blackburn have contributed a total of GBP53,000 (GBP20,000 in 2008 and GBP33,000 in 2009) raised during charity dinners that were organised. Besides the charity functions, contributions from our friends in the U.K have been deposited into an account with Habibsons Bank Ltd and periodically transferred to Malaysia.

In recognition of their generosity, we are giving them the honour of naming the prayer hall (or 'surau' in Malay) at Rumah Aman 2. So come on ladies, put on your thinking caps and submit your entries by posting comments to this post.

Maher Zain at Rumah Aman!

Maher Zain, the Swedish/Lebanese singer/music producer of "Thank You Allah" fame and his friends Brother Amir and Brother Wali ur-Rahman dropped in for a surprise visit at Rumah Aman on Friday 15 October 2010. They spent 2 hours with Brother Abdul Rehman Dakri (the founder), staff and children of Rumah Aman.

Good Show at SKRM Sports Day

Some of our boys did quite well in the Sekolah Kebangsaan Raja Muda annual school sports held on April 6, 2010 at the National Sports Complex, Seksyen 4 Shah Alam.

Roslan Hamgalim, 10, managed third placing and won the bronze medal for the 100 meters dash and helped his Yellow House to win the bronze medal for the 4 x 100 meters relay team.

Ahmad Amri Arba’in, also 10 years old also managed to get third placing for the 100 meters dash for the special children class and helped his relay team to win the 4 x 100 meters silver medal.

Muhammad Firdan Rahmat, 11, with 33 of his team mates made the Red House proud when they won the gold medal for the best house in the marching competition.

Good show boys and keep up the good spirit of sportsmanship.

Academic Acolades

Three of Rumah Aman boys attending primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Raja Muda (SKRM), Seksyen 4, Shah Alam showed their academic potential by registering good results for their end year school examination.

Abu Hurairah bin Junatal,8, surprised everyone when he came out tops in his class of Year One for the 2009 end year examination.

Rizal, 10, also made great improvements in his academic prowess when he came out 4^th in his class for the end year examination

Ahmad Amri Arba’in, 10, who is in a class for special children also came out tops in his class.

All three received a certificate of excellence and a plaque each.

Our Year One Student of 2010

This year, seven of Rumah Aman boys entered primary school Year One beginning January 4^th 2010.

They are Tuan Noor Umarul Amin bin Tuan Noor Azmi, Mohammad Ikhwan Shauqi bin Azwani Sham, twins, Muhammad Ilyas and Ilyasaq bin Mohd Azmi,, Muhammad Firdaus bin Hadiyani, Muhammad Azim bin Mohd Abdullah Sajat and Muhammad Faiz bin Md Saleh.

All of them are attending Sekolah Kebangsaan Raja Muda at Jalan Cempedak Seksyen 4, Shah Alam.

In addition, our six year old boy, Aidil Afiat bin Yaziz has also begun attending pre-school education at the same school on the same day.

We hope they will enjoy school and study hard.
